🔍 CONTEXT

EpiConnect, a self-management all-in-one app for people living with epilepsy

EpiConnect began as a real research need. A PhD student living with epilepsy herself spoke with us about her research on epilepsy and online social support. She had found that people with epilepsy are actively seeking community online, but the tools built for them don’t quite meet their needs. Together with three additional academic stakeholders, we are working to bring this app to life.

The app brings together everything someone managing epilepsy actually needs in one place: logging seizures and auras, tracking medications, understanding trigger patterns through insights, and finding genuine community and peer support. With a gentle approach, we are creating an app that supports people living with epilepsy in a journey that we know is difficult to manage alone. I am working with 7 other students including 1 project manager, 3 designers, and 3 developers.

🚩 THE PROBLEM

Managing epilepsy is complex and requires continuous tracking of unpredictable triggers

Epilepsy is unpredictable by nature, and managing it requires keeping track of a lot: medications, seizures, auras, sleep, stress, and potential triggers. For someone newly diagnosed, it becomes especially burdensome, especially when multiple forms of tracking come into play.

People with epilepsy report memory problems

Surveyed people with epilepsy are interested in joining community forums for peer support

Surveyed people with epilepsy would like a platform to manage their medication and seizures

🎯 GOALS

How might we simplify and centralize epilepsy tracking so individuals can better manage to their condition?

From secondary research, co-design sessions, and a desirability study, we came up with a few goals for this app

📔 Streamline seizure, aura, and trigger tracking to reduce friction in daily logging

🤝 Foster meaningful social support through connections with peers and epilepsy experts

💜 Design a calm, supportive environment that encourages consistent medication and symptom tracking

✏️ BRANDING

Color Palette & Typography

From our desirability study, we found that many people living with epilepsy preferred dark mode due to light sensitivity. So, we decided to design a color palette for both light and dark mode.

For our typography, I prioritized accessibility to ensure the interface is easy to read. We selected Atkinson Hyperlegible for headers due to its design for low-vision users, enhancing clarity and legibility. For body text, we chose Lexend, a typeface developed to reduce visual stress and improve reading performance. To maintain visual consistency, we paired this with rounded iconography that aligns with the overall rounded of our UI.

Mascot

Research showed that people with epilepsy often associate the condition with brain imagery and lightning bolts, which can evoke negative emotions. To shift this, I created a seahorse mascot, Finn, as a gentle companion throughout the user’s epilepsy journey.

Fun fact! The seahorse’s scientific name is hippocampus, which is a part of the brain that can be involved in epilepsy.

🖋️ DESIGN

Core Features

Through iterative ideation, wireframing, usability testing, and critique, we developed our core features while thoughtfully integrating our branding and Finn throughout the experience.

Onboarding

Explore key features through clear value propositions, then complete onboarding to build a personalized profile with seizure types and known triggers. Users can also invite “anchors” (supporters) to assist with medication reminders.

Seizure / Aura Logging

Log adverse events quickly with minimal effort through streamlined inputs, preset options, and auto-populated fields. A top navigation bar enables users to jump between sections for efficient, easy access.

Daily Check-in

Log potential triggers, sleep, hydration, and mood in a simple daily check-in, creating a record that can be compared against seizures in the insights tab.

Insights

View trends across seizures, medication, triggers, and symptoms through clear, digestible metrics. An interactive calendar and toggleable triggers allow users to identify patterns and see which factors may coincide with seizures.

Community

Connect with others by joining or creating groups based on shared interests, and engage in discussions for peer support. An expert tab also allows users to ask questions and receive insights from epilepsy professionals.

Medication Management

Log and manage medications with built-in reminders for doses and refills, including support for as-needed medications. Medication adherence data is also integrated into insights to help track patterns over time.
